The Bitcoin Boom

Bitcoin was created by a person called “Satoshi Nakamoto” in 2008 and is the first digital currency that fulfills all the requirements of a real, sustainable currency. It’s scarce; it’s an open source currency, meaning it’s controlled by absolutely no one; it’s encrypted and unhackable, at least so far; and each unit can only be owned by one person, therefore eliminating the possibility of a pyramid scheme.

The technological aspects with Bitcoin are slightly difficult to grasp, but what isn’t is the real-world consequences. When Bitcoin started it traded for a few cents, now Bitcoins are worth over $100 a piece. They also are having an increasing presence in the digital marketplace. Just imagine soon they will be a payment option at virtually very online store.

The thing that worries everyone about Bitcoin is that it’s completely free of state intervention. No person or group of people can gain control of the currency production, which is rare at this day and age. We see it happen everywhere in the world today and that make makes economist nervous. Bitcoin is opening new avenues because it’s an alternative avenue to paper money. This could be something that impacts us technological like the Internet or email.

Another reason why viral can be wrong…

Remember this face, this is 17 year old Rehtaeh Parsons, who was raped at 15 years old by four boys at a friend’s home in 2011. This young girl hung herself in the bathroom of her family’s home in Halifax, Nova Scotia as the result of a picture her rapists took the night of the incident. The photograph went viral among Parson’s classmates. The heart-wrenching part of the entire situation is that the Canadian Mounted Police have never filed a single charge in the case.

This is yet another negative, sad reminder of the power of social media. We as a society need to do better to protect our young children. There have been too many incidents including Amanda Todd and the Steubenville, Ohio case where social media has had a negative effect on our youth.

Google Fiber is no longer an April Fool’s Joke

Remember when Google made an April Fool’s Joke about Google Fiber. Well that joke is becoming a reality. Google announced last week that Austin will be the next city to get Google’s high speed Internet network. This network will run 100 times faster than today’s average broadband connection. Google plans to start connecting homes in Austin by mid-2014, but pricing for the product has yet to be revealed.

Twitter Adds Music Streaming to its Resume

This past Friday Twitter released their new music app to a few lucky users. Of course those users were all high-profile users like Ryan Seacrest. However, for the rest of us normies, it’s rumored that it’ll be available in about a week. Twitter music suggests artists and songs to listen to based on a variety of signals, and is personalized based on which accounts a user follows on Twitter. I can’t wait to see if Twitter can compete in an already crowded space. They definitely have a head start by having over 200 million active users. Do you think you’ll use the Twitter music app?
