At some point in your career you will be retire, leave, or heaven forbid, be fired from a position, it is an inevitable part of the working person’s cycle. However, have you ever wondered how you can leave a company with a bang? Well Andrew Mason may not have planned his exit but he definitely went out with a bang last week.
Some of you are probably wondering who is Andrew Mason and why should you care about him getting fired? Well, unless you have been living under a rock the past 5 days, he is a co-founder and CEO of Groupon who was fired last Thursday for Groupon’s poor performance. Instead of being a typical CEO and leaving quietly or having a press release, Mason opted for a different approach and wrote a candid letter to his former colleagues. Mason’s letter received a lot of criticism and press last week and I believe it was for all the right reasons. What made his letter so awesome is that Mason broke the typical mold of CEOs being stuff shirts and instead took an honest, humorous approach and let his true character shine. Mason was extremely frank in his letter which to me was the biggest breath of fresh air. Rarely do you hear a CEO speak about the company that they were fired from in such a frank tone. I also like that he never blamed anyone for his firing. He laid out all the issues, and the good points, out in black and white and took responsibility for everything that happened and for that I commend him.
